Hi! I’m HEATHER

COACH, friend, writer, MotheR,
And lowey fraternity House president
WELCOME!! WANT THE MOM HUDDLE BACKGROUND?

Hi friends! I say this because I don’t know too many strangers. In fact, my Midwestern roots and generally being a talker likely make me this way. Regardless, here we are! I want to give The Mom Huddle background for those curious.  By sharing pieces of my story, I hope to create community and connection for women, specifically career moms.

This is not a forum to discuss only Instagram worthy moments in our lives. Similarly, we’re here to talk about the ugly stuff too. Furthermore, digging into thoughts and feelings on this motherhood journey you may feel only you possess. However, when we are honest, we quickly realize those thoughts and feelings are shared by a whole community. It’s not so lonely after all! Therefore, grab a cup of coffee, a diet coke, or a bottle of wine and enjoy being part of The Mom Huddle! In addition, if you are curious about me, read on for background on who this Heather lady is….

THE MOM HUDDLE BACKGROUND

Let’s back up a bit…

RURAL INDIANA

I grew up in rural Indiana on a hog and grain farm. Compare to the John Mellencamp song Small Town, and you’re basically there. I am literally a Midwest stereotype in the flesh and blood! After attending Purdue University for my Public Relations degree, I moved to the “big city” of Indianapolis.

I love Indy! My sarcasm comes from the fact someone not from the Midwest is surely laughing at my reference to Indy as a big city. For the most part, it’s a small town with a few more stoplights and people.

PASSIONS

I’m passionate about a myriad of things, including sports, music, DIY projects, church, movies, board/card games, the list keeps going. Subsequently, I jump whole heartedly into a lot of different things, especially when I have an idea.

I love hanging out with family and friends. Likewise, putting on a good event, whether for work or pleasure, is my JAM!

I enjoy a good work-out/sweat session and the high it provides me. Cardio over yoga all day, but I’m starting to understand the need for centering and yoga.

OUTLOOK

Ordinarily, I’m a positive and happy person. Consequently, you will rarely meet me without a smile on my face or a hug coming your way!

Conversely, this doesn’t mean I’ve avoided tragedy or sadness. For instance, I lost my Mom in a tragic car accident when I was 28, had a miscarriage at 29, etc. However, I choose to keep putting one foot in front of the other, knowing there are brighter things ahead. In short, my coping is to embrace sadness for what it is. Then onward we go (all of the positive voices in my head)!!

MENTOR & Coach

THE MOM HUDDLE BACKGROUND- MENTOR & COACH

I worked in the Sports Industry with adidas and Reebok for 17 years. My focus was relationship building and the outfitting of the NBA, WNBA, NHL, MLS, NCAA, UFC, and Crossfit.  Generally, I was pretty good at the relationship building piece of it and just plain old figured out how to get s**t done. Call it the farm girl in me, but when a problem arises, my MO is to jump in and figure out how to fix it.

Above all, I enjoyed mentoring my team and others in both their life and career goals. I’ll stop there for now, consequently some would call this foreshadowing…

At the end of 2018, I left adidas to pursue something for myself. I was told by EVERYONE to take my time. Take time to figure out who I was again. Time to enjoy myself. Particularly, time to relax and not jump into the next, the next, the next. Contrary to every go-go-go, action-oriented bone in my body, I did.

FRIEND

THE MOM HUDDLE BACKGROUND- FRIEND

My nickname is MURPHY! Why, you might ask? I have really random things happen to me, consequently, my college friends dubbed me Murphy. If you aren’t following, Murphy’s Law is the saying ‘what can happen, will happen.’ Truer words have never applied to me. Nonetheless, the Murphy stories are what makes my life entertaining…. at least that is the lens I view my Murphy life through to stay sane. If you want examples of this, it will be a blog story, so tune in. Let’s just say, I’ve hit a dog who made national news (even the Today Show). Botched IUD? Yep. Quick and simple, like they said? Nope. It really has just gotten to the point where I expect the unexpected to happen. It’s going to…

In each phase of my life though, I’ve been able to surround myself with amazing friends. Some all the way through and some in certain stages, but all an important piece of who I am and how I interact with others. This is really where I came up with the idea for my book about the importance of supportive tribes in your life.

WRITER

THE MOM HUDDLE BACKGROUND- WRITER

I have been consciously writing since the beginning of 2019.  Out of this self-reflection, I have discovered a few things about myself. I…. (read this “I” in a very dramatic tone, try it again…. I….)

#1: enjoy writing, who knew?!? Check out my Linking Indy Women blog recaps!

#2: have relatable and funny stories to share.

#3: discovered my purpose is Connection through Radiating Happiness and I want to figure out how to use this purpose daily.

#4: am now a Life and Leadership Coach. I enjoy supporting people in finding their own version of happiness. (See?! Foreshadowing from the Mentor section!) I am certified through iPEC (CPC and ELI-MP) and the ICF (ACC).

#5: want to write a book and start a blog for moms.  In short, moms need to feel they are an active, contributing and valued part of this amazing team. Supporting and uplifting each other, for example. Hence the start of The Mom Huddle!

MOTHER

THE MOM HUDDLE BACKGROUND- MOTHER

THESE are my fraternity housemates. God love them. I’m a mom of two boys. Actually, if we’re being honest here, three…. I intentionally waited to share information about me being a mom until further down the page. First off, it’s not that I don’t love being a mom, I do. But honestly, how often is motherhood our lead in and we never get around to talking about anything else in our lives? For 18 years (or so), motherhood consumes us. In the meantime, it’s important to remember we are an individual with amazing talents. Similarly, I would argue it may be even more important for our children to see us sharing those talents! But I digress, back to my fraternity house….

LOWEY FRATERNITY OFFICERS

My VP- Jeremy

He’s the yin to my yang. We’ve been married for 16 years and have no fun. I kid…. we have all the fun. Some would say too much fun since on paper we’re considered “adults” and “parents.” He is funny, witty, supportive, grounded, and everything I need in my life. We are truly partners in this whole marriage and parenting thing. He does just as much laundry and making of dinners as I do. And even with all of these amazing talents, he can still find ways to drive me crazy at times. #truth

Assistant TO THE Regional Manager- Jake

Welcome to 13. Jake will be a leader and likely a sports agent one day. Everything is a negotiation. Therefore, we’re on our A-game with this one. He is his father, which is funny MOST of the time. Jake is our sporty kid who is quick witted and always in for a joke or social gathering. He inherited his mother’s need to constantly plan something. Jake also has taken an interest in music, which I love but don’t make a big deal about…. be cool Mom, be cool.

Philanthropy Chair- Bryce

This is my compassionate guy. Bryce has a servant’s heart and always looks for ways to help his classmates, teachers, friends, and family. He loves to volunteer. Bryce turned 11 recently and celebrated doing ALL the things (bowling, putt-putt, laser tag, and pool time) with some of his closest friends. He is more timid and reserved but do not let him fool you. He has a sneaky wit about him. He also enjoys gardening and cooking… eat your heart out ladies!

Lowey Fraternity House President

THE MOM HUDDLE BACKGROUND- LOWEY FRATERNITY HOUSE

I joke (often) about living in a fraternity house. For the most part, living with three boys is literally non-stop action. Not at all appropriate a majority of the time either, by the way! Farting is normal and will be laughed at typically. Pranks are a staple in our house. Opposite of what you may think, I’m NOT always on the receiving end either. Although, take my towel when I’m in the shower and you might hit my tipping point from fun-loving laughing mom to CRAZY mom! You’ve been warned!

I am writing a book on motherhood and how it is a non-compete sport. We don’t all have to agree, but we have to be smart enough to realize there is more than one way to raise a child and be a woman. As a result, I realized I had more to say than what was going to fit in a book (you know, the whole talker thing). Hence the start of The Mom Huddle blog. My hope out of this community is we share not only my stories, but the stories of other moms. Even creating our own version of a mom manual.

IN SUMMARY

The Mom Huddle is about support. Leaning on one another and not being afraid to ask for help or advice for fear of judgment. Not a “how you should” raise your kid forum, but rather a “have you tried this?” space, for instance. Although it is just the beginning, like other projects, I’m jumping all in. I look forward to sharing our stories together. If nothing else, let’s enjoy the ride!
